PERSPECTIVES

What do you feel is the most important issue facing the accounting profession today?

CPAs play a critical role as public servants and the expertise required to become a CPA is well warranted. Academic institutions, corporate entities, and certifying bodies must collaborate and explore innovative solutions that expand certification pathways for candidates to meet new and evolving requirements. Today, less than 2 percent of CPAs are Black, and this number has been consistent for the past ten years. To grow the number of Black CPAs and advance a more diverse and equitable workforce and profession it will require strategic and meaningful partnership and aligned purpose.

What one thing would you recommend accountants do to prepare for the future?

I would recommend CPAs from diverse backgrounds aspire and prepare to serve on state boards of accountancy in order to ensure equitable processes and requirements for licensure.

What one skill or experience would you recommend that young women getting started in the accounting profession master?

I would encourage a young woman starting a career in accounting to know what she wants to be proactive in managing her career. I would also encourage her to be curious and explore unbeaten paths. Accounting is a foundational career that can branch out across many industries, so don’t be afraid to take risks and explore new opportunities with the guidance of a mentor.
